Who We Are

Doctors of BC, formerly known as the BC Medical Association (BCMA), is a voluntary association of 14,000 physicians, residents and medical students in British Columbia.

Our Mission is to promote a social, economic, and political climate in which members can provide the citizens of BC with the highest standard of health care, while achieving maximum professional satisfaction and fair economic reward.

We make a meaningful difference for the medical profession, patients and our health care system by:

  • Representing physicians in negotiations with the BC government for the Physician Master Agreement
  • Advocating on issues of importance to the profession and patients.
  • Supporting the leadership role of physicians to make positive change in the health care system through our partnership with provincial government in the Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs)
  • Promoting good health and well-being of BC residents

Learn about the steps we're taking towards achieving our mission in our Strategic Plan, which has been extended until 2018 by our Board of Directors

We are governed by a Board of Directors and a 104-member Representative Assembly comprised of physician members. Our President serves as primary spokesperson. In addition, Doctors of BC members contribute to over 60 committees that advocate for issues of importance to physicians and to the citizens of BC.

Doctors of BC was founded in 1900 as the British Columbia Medical Association, and has a long history of working for members, improving patient care, and influencing health care policy.

Our President is elected annually to represent and give a voice to our membership. Each year, our elected President tours the province meeting with members, key stakeholders, media and public figures. Read about our current President.

The Board of Directors oversee the activities and internal affairs of the Association and set its strategic direction and policies. The Board is comprised of our President and President-Elect, both of whom are elected by the membership, along with seven Directors-at-Large who are nominated by the membership and elected by the Representative Assembly.

The Representative Assembly is an influential body that represents members' interests, provides a forum for members to come together to discuss issues of importance to the profession, and offers guidance to the Board. The Representative Assembly is elected by the membership and others who are appointed by a Section or representative organization.

Our leadership team directs and guides Doctors of BC staff, working alongside the Board of Directors to support the strategic direction of the association.

At Doctors of BC we maintain a supportive environment which enables all of our employees to make a difference in the standards of healthcare in BC and in the professional satisfaction of our members.

Together, we make a difference so our doctors can make theirs.
